Street wear in its early years was also known as skate wear. It was fast gaining momentum as a fashion statement of the youth, more specifically the teens. It is widely believed that street wear first originated on the West Coast. The developments were rather fast and by the mid-eighties had become a movement of sorts with demand increasing steadily and constantly.

Street wear was soon labeled as a culture and is the case with most fashion cultures, many sub-cultures also evolved. Over the years street wear has many divisions and levels of sub-cultures. The best thing about street wear is that there are no definitive rights and wrongs. You can create your own style that suits your looks and comfort levels and yet belong to the street wear culture. The street wear formula has no fixed menu. Everyone has their own formula and there are umpteen labels each one having its own fan following.

Street wear is a business that has its own connotations all over the globe. Many times it is nothing but a copy of existing labels and looks, tweaked a bit here and there. But the lovers of street wear are smart enough to distinguish between real street wear style and poor imitations. The Japanese markets were at the forefront and were instrumental in taking the culture of street wear ahead by another definitive step. They had the innovation and the desired levels of creativity to make street wear better, cooler and more desirable. They were the ones to bring toys and gadgets into the frame.

In its early days, street wear was considered lower class by major cloth retail outlets and fashion shops and were shunned, not given any shelf space even in the remotest corners of their shops. The picture has now turned around completely with many A-class retailers and malls devoting entire sections to displaying the latest in street wear. There are innumerable blogs about street wear and street wear business and brands. The informal and pleasant way of presentation of these blogs, mostly without any PR efforts, has made many of them the reference points for local as well as international street wear fans.
